What if?

What if students were not allowed to bring a cell phone to school?

  1. A lot more would get done, and a lot less drama would be created. If teachers of yesteryear were worried about note writing, they would be appalled at the instant communication among students today. The creative misuse of this technology is growing, too. Bullying, cheating, candid photos and video are just a few of the of the ways cell phones have changed the classroom.

  2. Actually, students aren't allowed to USE cell phones in school, but enforcing the policy seems totally impossible. Kind of like the Catholic Church trying to enforce its "no artificial contraceptives" rule. The people vote with their feet. I think this is another case of parents taking some of the responsibility: we need to teach manners (or someone who knows manners needs to teach families). It would also help if teachers weren't using their phones during school time.

  3. Not as much problems at the elementary level yet, most of my students have been good about giving them to me in the morning to lock them up. I can see how they can be used in middle and high school in different ways. Too bad a cell phone scrambler could not be put in place inside of the classrooms, but I would suppose that would affect wireless computer communication. I still do not have a cell phone and can not really see the need for one. I guess I have lived most of my life without having to get in contact with someone at the drop of a hat, and do not see the necessity of one now. It is also surprising how children who do not have the money for school supplies, come to school with cell phones!

  4. At our school, if a teacher sees a cell phone we are to confiscate it and the parent can come into the school office and pick it up. It slows the issue down significantly.
